  Clinical Practice Guidelines

Health care professionals with expertise in palliative care developed these guidelines/protocols. The disciplines of nursing, pharmacy and medicine were represented. These guidelines/protocols are intended for use by palliative care consultants, as well as other physicians and nurses who are involved in the care of palliative patients.

Guideline/protocol development strategies include use of evidenced-based sources and consultation with external experts in palliative care. Recommendations were formulated by consensus among the members of the Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee. Health benefits, risks and costs were taken into consideration in the developing the guideline. Prior to implementation, the guidelines/protocols were evaluated using the AGREE Instrument by a subgroup of the committee, uninvolved with the guideline development. Guidelines/protocols were not externally reviewed.

Given the medically frail nature of the population, patients' views and preferences were not specifically sought in developing the guidelines/protocols. However, the guidelines/protocols reflect the developers' clinical observations of patients' experiences and their reported concerns.

Guidelines/protocols are updated every three years, or sooner in the event of emerging clinical evidence supporting a more timely change, in accordance the Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee process. Although the guideline has not been piloted among target users, it reflects current practice within the Capital Health Regional Palliative Care Program. The guidelines/protocols were developed without external funding and are editorially independent.
